8 Tips for National Traffic Awareness Month

- 11:44 am - August 17th, 2026

This time of year, the roads are crowded with drivers going to the mountains or the beach, kids on bicycles or electric scooters, and tour buses heading to vacation destinations. And with school starting soon, the school buses will be back, as well.

And because August is National Traffic Awareness Month, here are a few tips for truck drivers to stay safe on the road:

  1. Maintain following distance: Give yourself extra stopping distance—at least four to nine seconds depending on your speed and vehicle length.

  2. Check blind spots frequently: Check mirrors every 8-10 seconds to be aware of vehicles entering your blind spots.

  3. Make wide turns carefully: Trucks need extra space and time to make wide, careful turns. Signal appropriately.

  4. Eliminate distractions: If you must attend to an activity other than driving, exit the highway or pull over.

  5. Expect heavy construction: August is peak road-work season.

  6. Keep an eye out for vacationers: This includes distracted drivers stopping to view the scenery, and cars towing trailers.

  7. Take regular rest breaks: Get enough rest; don’t drive when you’re fatigued, feeling ill, or using medications (including over-the-counter medicine) that make you drowsy or dizzy.

  8. Hydrate constantly: Drink plenty of water and avoid sugary or heavily caffeinated drinks that cause sluggishness and dehydration.
