11 Tips to Stay Safe on the Road This Spring!

- 2:44 pm - March 13th, 2026

March for truckers means preparing for unpredictable spring weather, including rain, high winds, and lingering freezing temperatures. And, yes, depending on where you drive, even snow!

And because we at Truck Service of Virginia care about our truckers’ well-being as much as the products and services we offer, here are 11 driving tips to stay safe this month:

  1. Handle variable weather: Spring brings sudden, heavy rain and high winds. Reduce speed, keep a firm grip on the wheel, and, if winds are severe, consider stopping to avoid tipping.
  2. Prevent hydroplaning: As snow melts and rain falls, roads become slick. Avoid sudden movements and slow down to maintain tire traction.
  3. Avoid potholes: The winter freeze-thaw cycle damages roads, creating dangerous potholes that can cause flat tires, alignment, or suspension issues.
  4. Watch for flooding: Never attempt to drive through flooded roads. Turn around to avoid getting stuck or trapped in hidden, deep water.
  5. Increase following distance: Due to reduced traction from rain, increase the space between your truck and the vehicle in front.
  6. Inspect wipers and lights: Ensure windshield wipers are in top condition to handle heavy rain, and all lights are working for visibility.
  7. Check tire pressure: As temperatures fluctuate and rise, check tire pressure to avoid underinflation, which can cause poor handling and blowouts.
  8. Clean your truck: Wash off winter salt and road grime to prevent rust and ensure lights and mirrors are clean.
  9. Be aware of wildlife: Animals are more active during spring, increasing the risk of collisions.
  10. Watch out for work zones: With construction season beginning, be prepared for lane shifts, reduced speeds, and workers near the road.
  11. Be conscious of pedestrians and cyclists: Increased temperatures bring more people out, requiring extra caution in residential areas, at intersections, and near bike lanes.
