Prepare Your Truck for Winter
Winter is on the way, and we at Truck Service of Virginia want to make sure you are prepared for whatever weather and road conditions you may encounter, with these tips:
Maintenance and checks:
- Battery: Have your battery professionally tested and replace it if necessary. Clean the terminals and ensure it is secure.
- Fluids:
- Check your antifreeze/coolant to ensure the correct ratio and freeze protection level.
- Fill the windshield washer fluid reservoir with a winter-grade fluid that has de-icing properties.
- Keep your fuel tanks at least half full to help prevent fuel lines from freezing.
- For diesel trucks, inspect fuel filters and consider using anti-gel additives or a fuel heater.
- Tires:
- Check tire pressure and tread depth.
- Consider installing winter tires for better traction on snow and ice.
- Ensure you have chains if they are required in your area.
- In cold weather, a small amount of weight in the back can help with traction for rear-wheel-drive trucks.
- Brakes and systems:
- Inspect the entire braking system, including checking for any ice buildup in the air lines.
- Have your air dryer serviced to remove moisture.
- Lights: Verify all headlights, taillights, and turn signals are working properly.
- Wipers and visibility: Replace worn windshield wiper blades with heavy-duty winter blades designed to handle snow and ice. Check that the defrosters are working correctly.
Emergency preparedness:
- Emergency kit: Pack a kit with items like a flashlight, first-aid kit, blankets, and a shovel.
- Clear snow and ice: Before driving, completely clear all snow and ice from the entire vehicle, including the roof of the trailer
