Do You Have a Canine Co-Pilot?

- 10:39 am - January 27th, 2026

January is “Train Your Dog Month!” What does this have to do with trucks? A lot!

A significant number of U.S. truck drivers travel with dogs! It’s estimated that 40% to 50% of truckers take pets on the road, often for emotional support and companionship to combat loneliness, making dogs popular “co-pilots.”

If you travel across America with your furry friend, here’s some advice:

  • Prioritize your pet’s safety, health, and comfort by securing it with a crate, harness or pet barrier to prevent it from reaching the pedals or getting hurt in sudden stops.
  • Always use a leash when outside the truck for potty breaks and to prevent escapes.
  • Rely on A/C, not open windows for ventilation (you don’t want to risk your pet jumping or falling out the window or getting hit with debris).
  • Never leave your dog alone in the truck during hot weather.
  • Up-to-date tags and a microchip are crucial for reunion if your dog is lost.
  • Stop every few hours for walks and potty breaks.
  • Set up a cozy bed, blankets, and toys in a dedicated space in your cab.
  • Carry your dog’s vaccination/medication records and have emergency vet clinics mapped out.
  • Keep your dog groomed and clean the cab regularly with seat covers or towels.
  • Pack enough food, treats, water, bowls, medications, and cleaning supplies.
  • Gradually introduce your dog to truck sounds and motion before long trips.
  • Store important items and medications out of their reach.
  • Train your dog to stay off the clutch/brake and away from the driver’s seat.
  • Establish a consistent routine of feeding, potty, and play times.
